Welcomgroup Bay Island
Category : 4 Star.
Location : 110 km from Delhi, 150 km from Jaipur
The hotel is completely decked with everything from a swimming pool to
a seaside view to a conference room to cable TV. The world famous
architect Charles Correa, designed the hotel. The hotel is almost
entirely built of the wood found in the island. The hotel is a multi level
structure. So this involves a little walking up and down. When you enter
the hotel you enter from the upper level. The reception is wide open and
is completely made of wood found in the islands. Once you are checked into
one of the 48 rooms they have, you are officially in paradise.
The rooms are nice with double beds and a nice bathroom. There is
air-conditioning and a TV in every room. Most rooms have a sea view. The
only time to be in the rooms is in the afternoon when the sun is baking
outside. Leave the Air conditioners running. It will be a pleasant
surprise when you step in from the heat.
The hotel has several facilities. Starting with, they rent out snorkeling
kits, complete with fins and all. You can ask for towels and they will
provide you with beach towels. You can also get packed lunches if you plan
to go on a daylong picnic. They also can arrange for motorbikes if you
want to go into town. They will also get you taxis at the drop of a hat.
The hotel also has great ideas for sight seeing and day trips. Some of the
places you have to go to are red skin island and jolly boy island. The
best place to go snorkeling and get back in half a day is Bird Island.
They have the most beautiful water and a great lagoon. Room service, safe
deposit and money changer, laundry, doctor on call, secretarial fax and
telex services & baby sitting are available on request.
Since you are confined to getting all your meals at the hotel, they serve
up a really great menu. They have one main restaurant called Mandalay,
which has a buffet style setup. They change the menus every meal, so its
hard to come across the same dish. They have some of the freshest and
tastiest seafood. You have to request the crab masala. Its the best
dish on the menu.
In the evenings, if you happen to be at the hotel, you have to sit in the
NicoBar and watch the sunset. The hotel is located on a slope so you get a
beautiful view of the horizon.
They have their own private pier and a nice walk along the water. You can
take a walk along the dirt road. It will take you through some villages
and fishermans huts and then to the cellular jail. The Pierre is a
great place to collect shells if you are interested. During low tide, the
water recedes by a good 20 feet.
Since The Andaman Islands are hit by monsoons in summer, the best time to
go is in December.
